It is a depression of 3,000 kilometers without exit of waters that receives San Pedro river and a lot of bankruptcy by which water is filtered from the Andes Mountains. It is the greater saline deposit of Chile. Its cover is white and rough, stained by the fine dust of the desert.

During our passage, we will visit Toconao town located at 2,475 meters of altitude. It is an oasis, where people cultivate all types of fruits. In front of its square is located the Church and Bell Tower of San Lucas, declared National Monument.

It occupies an extension of 100 kilometers in length by 80 of wide. The salt is a product of the underground water outcrop that, saturated with salts, evaporates leaving scabs rich in salt and minerals. The rivers fed by Andean snows, cross the area allowing the configuration of multiple oases. This it is the scene where the atacameƱan culture was developed.

The air is extraordinarily dry here, which gives it perfect transparency. The salt scab has been opened to leave space for small lagoons that are the favorite habitat of aquatic birds, particularly Flamingoes, Taguas, and Guallatas. The most important is the Chaxa Lagoon.

The Atacama salt lake is located in the center of the most barren desert in the world. Many salt fields and salt lakes are abundant in this place. It is well-known for its strong winds due to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean and the Andes mountain.

We travel to Toconao in the Atacama Salt Flat. Toconao is a small Atacama town, with a church and bell tower built out of only adobe and straw, and handicraft workshops full of items like alpaca wool and cactus crafts. The protected beauty of the National Reserves will captivate us. The park contains many species of flora and fauna, some in danger of extinction.

The Atacama Salt Flat is part of the reserve, and a large number of flamingo colonies have chosen Chaxa Lake as their favorite place for nesting. The geomorphology of the Salt Flat makes for a unique landscape, and with its rugged surface and difficult access, it becomes the perfect location for many species of birds.
